What do we do?
We recreate periods of history, both to learn more about the past and for our own enjoyment.
Time clings to places. When too many old things are jumbled together, holes in time can open. Our Society takes care of those who have wandered through one and become stranded in our era - and those courageous voyagers who have slipped the bonds of time and travelled here. We provide advice and social opportunities to those who have become lost, a secret society of the timeslipped living in the modern world.
Others take on the persona of a traveller who has stepped with confidence through the fabric of reality, daytripping through the decades, appearing as the same character dressed for whatever the occasion calls for.
Some members like to adopt several different personas, one for each era they portray.
Some members do not think too much about how or why their persona fits in. Handwaving the explanation to focus on the experience of living in a certain period, or pretending we are in another century, is also welcome.
Finally - some members are not so interested in personas. They want community, costuming, and crafts, and they are welcome here. Don't feel you need to adopt a full and detailed backstory before arriving, or put on a "performance" - people in the past were broadly like us, they laughed, got bored, walked places, ate things. It's ok to be yourself.
Time Traveller Tea Parties
Members come from many different time periods - so we come together dressed in finery of all eras (or modern garb) for regular socials. These are relaxed opportunities for us to make plans for the future, welcome newcomers, in a casual environment.Days Out & Dinner Parties
We visit parks, stately homes, the beach - or organise formal dinners, balls and afternoon teas - dressed in the costume, and adopting the manners, of a certain period.
History
We enjoy visiting - and giving! - talks about our particular passion periods from the past, sharing books, going on film trips and more.Crafts & Skills
Sewing, calligraphy, dancing - horsemanship, painting, fan-making - historic cookery - and the considerable historic challenge of keeping house without modern utilities. The Society is an opportunity to share these skills with others.Friendship
We are a social organisation, connecting like-minded time-travellers trapped in our present decade. Perhaps you will meet people you can correspond with by post, resume the custom of "at homes", take out to the drive in, and spend time in the past outside of official Society events.Adopting a Persona
The Timeslip Society is not a living history group: we do not exist to put on performances for others. Nor are we roleplayers: we do not follow a plot or perform a character. Instead, we make-believe for a while that we are ourselves - living in another era. We might adopt another name and backstory, and research skills our persona might have had.Time clings to places. My Group doesn't do any of those things
Be the change. We are a very new organisation, with big dreams. For the foreseeable future, Groups are more like "me and my mates" - they are defined by the people within them. If no one you know knows how to make a corset, then it's on you to learn it then pass it on.
Historic recreation societies are as diverse as the people in them - so whatever era or activity you want to be participating in, take the lead on making it happen.
